Director of the Library
Founded in 1920, the American Library in Paris plays a central role in the cultural life of English-speaking Paris.
The Director is the Library's chief executive responsible for managing all operations, including the Library's $1.3 million annual budget, a staff of 13 (six of them credentialed librarians), and a collection of more than 100,000 items (making the Library the largest English-language lending library in continental Europe), and a 10,000 sq. ft. facility open 60 hours a week, drawing roughly 90,000 visitors per year. The Library is a private entity that relies on membership dues and donations for three quarters of its revenues.
In addition to managing and motivating the Library's staff and volunteers, the Director oversees the Library's budget and business operations and leads the Library's fundraising campaigns. The Director is the public face of the Library, meeting frequently with visitors and members, donors, authors, publishers, journalists, American and French government officials and heads of other American institutions in Paris.
The Director reports directly to the Library's board of trustees and assures coordination with the Library's USA Foundation, which oversees an endowment providing a measure of financial support to the Library.
In addition to its traditional collections and circulation functions, the Library's most significant activities include approximately 70 weekly evening events a year (predominantly evenings with prominent authors), an annual book award, a visiting fellowship program, significant youth programming, book groups, film screenings, and writing workshops. The Director is the host of the Library's annual gala dinner; recent gala speakers include Adam Gopnik, Joyce Carol Oates, Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, and John Irving.
The Library has just completed a major renovation of its facilities to adapt them to the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. As the Library prepares to celebrate its centennial, the new Director will be expected to build on the Library's recent successes, further burnishing the Library's profile as one of the city's premier forums for literature and the arts.
The search committee seeks candidates with the following skills:
Category I: Critical Skills
- fundraising experience
- ability to manage and motivate a team
- strong oral and written communication skills
- familiarity with literature and the literary world and/or arts/cultural world more generally
- French and English language ability
- budgeting/business operations/problem solving skills
- dedication to job and flexibility in working hours
Category II: Important Skills
- program development experience (literary/arts programming and children/teen activities)
- marketing skills
- background with non-profits (library,university, museum, arts)
Category III: Useful Skills
- technological savvy
- member of the Paris community
