Veronica Buckley presents The Secret Wife of Louis XIV: Francoise d'Aubigne, Madame de Maintenon.

About Veronica Buckley

Historian and biographer Veronica Buckley was born in New Zealand. She studied cultural history at London University and, later, social and economic history at Oxford. The author of Christina, Queen of Sweden and The Secret Wife of Louis XIV, she lived in Paris for several years and is now based in Vienna.

The Secret Wife of Louis XIV tells the story of Francoise d'Aubigné. Born in a prison in 1635, to a disinherited nobleman and condemned traitor and disinterested mother (herself the seduced warden's daughter), how did Francoise d'Aubigné overcome her challenged childhood to captivate the court of Versailles? Buckley's enthralling biography traces her story from pauper childhood, to salonnière, to the delicate position of Louis XIV's secret wife and uncrowned queen.
