Charles Trueheart joined the American Library in Paris as director in March, 2007.
His earlier career in journalism included fifteen years at The Washington Post, the last four as the newspaper's Paris correspondent. Before joining the foreign staff in 1993, he was a cultural affairs reporter for the Post responsible for coverage of book and magazine publishing and literary and intellectual topics.
Trueheart continues to serve as Paris editor of The American Scholar and also has contributed book reviews and other articles to The Atlantic Monthly, Bloomberg News, Preservation, and other publications.
Before joining the Washington Post, he was associate director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University and director of the John F. Kennedy School of Government's Public Affairs Forum. His earlier work in journalism included positions at USA Today, Publishers Weekly, The Baltimore News-American and the Greensboro Daily News.
Trueheart is a former senior warden of the American Cathedral in Paris, a former member of the Board of Foreign Parishes of the Episcopal Church, and a deputy to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. He is a member of the tenor section of the Paris Choral Society.
Born in Washington in 1951, Trueheart was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and Amherst College. He is married to Anne Swardson, editor-at-large at Bloomberg News; they have two children, Louise and Henry.
