Kids and TeensThe Library's children's and young adult department is a bustling place that represents an important part of the Library's activity. Children, teens and families are encouraged to make use of our large print and audio-visual collection, as well as the many programs and workshops offered for young people year round.

What the Library Offers...

A large Children's and Young Adult department, staffed by a full-time youth librarian. The department boasts a diverse collection and extensive children's programming.

For Infants and Toddlers

  • Board books (sturdy books for small hands, some with touch-and-feel components)
  • Picture books (classics and favorites, as well as new and noteworthy titles)
  • DVDs, music CDs and audiobooks
  • Mother Goose program, a twice-monthly lap-sit for one-to three-year olds, featuring books, rhymes and songs in English
  • Story Hour, a twice-weekly reading session for slightly older children (three to five years old)
Children attending lap-sit and/or story hour must have their own library card, or be covered by a family membership. Non-members may attend Story Hour to see if their children would enjoy this activity, a day fee will apply.

For Preschoolers and children starting school

  • Story Hour, a twice-weekly read-aloud session for slightly older children (three to five years old)
  • Picture books (classics and favorites, as well as new and noteworthy titles)
  • Age appropriate children's fiction, non-fiction and magazines
  • DVDs, music CDs and audiobooks

For school-aged children

  • Full access to a collection of 10,000 volumes for young people ages 1-17, including seminal classics and award winners for every age range as well as new and noteworthy material in a variety of forms
  • 15 magazine subscriptions
  • A collection of hundreds of DVDs and other audio-visual offerings
  • Saturday programs for children 6-12, including author visits, art and music appreciation, seasonal parties, along with literary and cultural events
  • The Library's Summer Reading Program attracts crowds of children and is growing every year
  • Bookworms Book Club for children 9-12 years old
  • Teen Bookworms, a book club for ages 12+
  • Monthly Teen Nights: after-hours workshops, including yoga, Poetry Cafés, Method acting and photography workshops, as well as pizza, soda and teen conviviality

The children's department is staffed by full-time children's librarian. The librarian is able to provide reference and research help for young people, as well as recommended reading material for all age levels and interests. The Library provides full reference services on site from Tuesday through Saturday. Members and users of the Library can receive general reference assistance. They may also arrange in-depth research conferences with a specific librarian by appointment.
